Our Leather Furniture Cleaning Procedure

  • Pre-inspection, investigation
  • Application of high-pressure steam;
  • Application of high quality leather furniture cleaners
  • Application of leather furniture conditioners

Sofa Cleaners® specialists begin our professional cleaning service with a thorough examination of your leather furniture piece, identifying the particular variety of leather covering your furniture and checking for specific stains or problem areas to determine the appropriate necessary cleaning method.

When used for upholstery, leather comes in two forms, smooth finished leather and unfinished leather, such as suede. Finished leather contains a type of protective coating while unfinished leather does not. Both varieties require different methods of cleaning and conditioning, and using the wrong cleaning product for the type of leather furniture you have can result in permanent damage. Blending fabric consists of either poly and cotton or pure cotton. Natural fabric cannot withstand the harshness of artificial detergents and chemicals.

When you purchase a leather article, you want to prolong its life as long as possible and keep it looking good. It is a major investment, and as such, requires your periodic attention.

Most people have little idea of how to care for leather. Even worse, most individuals are apprehensive about doing anything to leather for the fear of doing something that will cause damage or ruin their leather.

When working with leather we use only gentle cleaning and moisture soaps for complete moisture and a great shine. These soaps wash away all problem areas without dehydrating the leather.

Our soaps feature non-toxic chemicals that will not harm your leather, family or the environment, leaving you with a pure, natural and long lasting clean.

What is leather, exactly?

The British Standards Institute defines leather as follows: "Hide or skin with its original fibrous structure more or less intact and tanned. The hair or wool may, or may not, have been removed. Leather is also made from a hide or skin that has been split into layers or segmented either before or after tanning."

The amount of surface coating applied to the leather influences whether or not the item can be described as 'genuine' leather. "If the leather has a surface coating, the mean thickness of this surface layer, however applied, has to be 0.15mm or less."

In a nutshell, there are three basic types of genuine leather:

cleaned black leather sofa

  • Full grain: The full hide of the animal has been used with minimal interference. It's the most durable kind of leather but also the rarest and usually the most expensive.
  • Top grain: Top grain leather is the uppermost layer of the animal hide which has been buffed and polished.
  • Split: Split leather is taken from the bottom of the hide; it's fairly fragile but it is the cheapest type of leather available.

Corrected-grain is another common description, referring to any of the above leather that has had an artificial grain applied to its surface. Any imperfections are corrected or sanded off, and an artificial grain embossed into the surface and dressed with stain or dyes.

Not quite leather?

While shopping for a leather couch, you will likely see the words 'cow hide leather', 'genuine leather', '100% leather' or made-up names like 'Lucia leather' or even 'bonded leather' instead.

None of these names really give any indication of what kind of leather has been used or if indeed it's leather at all. Bonded leather (despite the name) has more in common with synthetics and is technically not considered leather at all.

Other pieces of 'leather' furniture may have the 'contact areas' (such as the seats, arm rests, vertical seat backs and rolls) upholstered in leather, but the 'non-contact areas' (such as the outside arms and back) upholstered in a leather-like synthetic material.

Leather Furniture Maintenance

cleaning leather sofa MaintenanceLeather is one of the most durable and adhering upholstery materials, and when maintained correctly and consistently requires a minimal amount of professional maintenance in order to last you decades.

Monthly cleaning will help ensure your leather furniture stays looking new. You should never use furniture polish, window cleaner, rough cloth, paper towels or any other material that may scratch the surface of the leather or clog the pores with lint. Always allow the leather to naturally air dry completely.

Immediately blot liquid spills with a dry cloth then wipe the leather furniture with a lightly dampened cloth to remove any residue of the spill. Blot away the excess water with a dry cloth and allow the leather to finish drying naturally. The exception to this method is, of course, a water spill. In this case, simply blot away the water with a soft, dry cloth and allow to air dry as you normally would. For food spills, especially oily foods, be sure to remove all food debris then wash the leather furniture with a dampened cotton cloth and a small amount of mild facial or dish soap. Wipe away excess soap with a dampened cloth and allow to air dry.

Leather Care Do'S

  • Nourish and Condition Leather Furniture
  • Dust and Vacuum Leather Furniture
  • Blot up spills ASAP without excessive rubbing
  • Always treat with dedicated leather care products from day 1
  • Always clean high wear areas little and often
  • Always use water-based products – these will correct the moisture level of the leather and help avoid staining. They will also keep your leather in the best condition
  • Have your leather professionally cleaned at regular intervals. (annually is recommended)
  • Keep your leather covered when not in use

Leather Care Don'ts

  • Do not forget to spot test any potential maintenance product
  • Do not let stains set
  • Do not use solvents or abrasives to try and remove stubborn stains or ink
  • Do not feed, nourish or condition your leather with oils or waxes
  • Do not allow dirt or soiling to build up. This is what often causes damage
  • Do not use general household cleaners
  • Do not allow staining or fading to become serious before considering professional restoration
  • Do not use baby wipes or magic erasers to clean your leather

What to ask before you buy a leather couch

  • "What type of leather is this couch?" Go for full grain or top grain leather, depending on your lifestyle and budget. Be wary of anything else, including split leather, bonded leather, pleather, faux leather, bicast, and synthetic leather.
  • "Is this leather used all over the couch?" A couch might have real leather on the seats and the tops of the arm rests, but not on the back or the sides. These will deteriorate faster than the leather parts.
  • "How long is the warranty?" And "what parts of the lounge are covered?"

+
My new white Italian leather sofa was stained recently. The stain was initially brown but with cleaning is now a very faint yellow stain. Can you remove it?

The stained area may require re-colouring. The yellow stain is damage to the leather finish, causing it to look yellowish. +
Can you get ink out of my leather?

Yes! We know that sometimes ink or dye from packaging, newspapers or damp/wet clothes can leave dye stains on your furniture. We restore your upholstery by removing these ugly dye transfer stains! We can also remove permanent ink or marker stains and spot re-dye affected areas if necessary.
+
Can you repair cracked leather?

Before cracking has a chance to develop, contact us and we will clean and condition the leather for you. Embedded dirt and dryness can cause the surface pigment to crack and the colour to fade. If your leather furniture or your car seats are cracking, we can fix them for you!
+
How should I maintain my leather furniture once cleaned?

Basic cleaning of your furniture will require you to wipe your furniture two or three times a week with a soft rag or vacuum. Make sure to be careful while cleaning, it is important that soft materials must be used when cleaning leather as it can scratch easily, affecting its distinct grain or finish.

We recommend professional cleaning and conditioning every year. Oils in your leather dry out and evaporate even when your leather is rarely used. It is important to replenish these oils as well as occasionally clean the leather to protect it for years to come.

+
Will you be able to determine the type of leather I have and the best way to treat it?

Different animal skins are used to produce a variety of leather finishes. All leather comes from one source, the hides of animals. The most common is from cows. All leathers are processed in a similar manner to achieve a particular look and feel. Once the leather is tanned and processed, certain sections are then selected for use in a particular application. This process determines the type of leather that will be made available to you. In almost all situations, similar tanning and dyeing chemicals and processes are used. The most common type of leather, Top Grain (coated) leather is used in almost all automotive and furniture upholstery. This type of leather is the most durable and easiest to maintain. Aniline (Nubuck) is a form of leather with a very soft feeling. Usually there is no finish, leaving it unsealed and susceptible to dirt and staining. Suede is a type of this leather.
+
Can you clean my car interior as well as my leather furniture?

Yes, leather interiors in vehicles take a lot of abuse from sun, water, and dirt. Our cleaning and conditioning process will help your interior last as long as your car.
+
I have a leather chair that is not in the best condition but it was expensive and I don't want to throw it out, do you think you can help?

We can usually help the appearance of your leather, and of course leave it physically clean. Removing soils and oils also prevents them from chemically attacking the leather finish, and penetrating the corium (substrata). As your leather ages, however, microscopic cracks develop which can become stained. Eventually, refinishing becomes necessary to achieve significant cosmetic improvement.
+
What does your conditioning process do for my leather?

Our thorough, hand-applied conditioner restores beneficial oils and water to your leather to help maintain optimum moisture content. This keeps it supple, which helps reduce severe creasing which can lead to cracking.
+
How often should my leather be conditioned?

It depends on how you use it, and how harsh your environment is. Exposure to sunlight and air flow accelerate the drying-out process. Rule of thumb; every 6 months to 2 years.
+
After you condition my leather will it rub off?

No, it will not rub off. We use only the dyes and finishes that were used when the leather was originally produced. The new finish is as hardy as the original finish.
+
Will the conditioner change the feel of my leather?

Although every situation can be different, it should feel very close or exactly like it did when it was new.
+
Can you service my furniture on site?

Yes! the best part is we can minimise the ‘down time’ of your furnishings by having one of our technician’s work ‘on site’ to expedite any cleaning and conditioning that is needed.
+
Can I condition my leather couch myself?

Yes, you can but we recommend leaving it to an expert for the best possible results! It is possible you will not use the right product and end up causing damage. Many products suitable for, say, saddle leather or footwear should never come near your upholstery, as is the case with some “cleaning protectants” which contain silicones.
+
Do you dye leather?

No, unfortunately we do not dye leather.
+
Do you repair rips and tears?

We do not repair leather rips and tears
+
I have an oil-based stain on my cushion, what can I do?

Oils tend to dissipate into leather. As such, small concentrations of oil may gradually disappear. To accelerate the process, apply dry corn starch directly to the affected area, covering the stain. Let the corn starch draw oil up out of the leather for 4-8 hours. Gently wipe away, and then repeat the process as necessary. Keep in mind that this is a home remedy with no detriment to the leather, but of limited effectiveness.
+
Do you charge to come out to my home and inspect my furniture?

If we come to inspect furniture and not carry out work, we may charge a small attendance fee.
