Leather Cleaning and Conditioning

Leather needs to be cleaned and conditioned. Many customers are sold leather furnishings with the impression that it is a hands-off purchase. No cleaning, nothing to worry about. This however couldn’t be further from the truth.

Whether you are the proud owner of a Protected Leather, Aniline Leather, or Nubuck Leather furniture piece, all leather should be cleaned and protected regularly to avoid organic and inorganic substances such as oil, food, makeup, ink, grease, soil, newspaper printand dyes from permanently embedding into the leather surface.

Leather exposed to sunlight will require cleaning and conditioning more frequently to prevent oils excreting from the leather, which leads to damage through drying and cracking. Sofa Cleaners® use market leading leather conditioning products to expertly care for your leather pieces.

What is a Leather Conditioner?

Leather conditioner is a leather care product used to condition and nourish leather of all ages.

Leather conditioners are designed to preserve the strength, beauty and flexibility of leather, as well as restore life into dry, worn out leather by replenishing natural oils used during the tanning process.

Replacing these oils helps preserve leather’s natural beauty and continues to protect leather from drying and cracking in future.

Leather conditioner should always be applied after cleaning to prevent oil in the conditioner from trapping dirt within your leather. This dirt weakens and breaks down leather fibres, wearing down your leather faster!

Sofa Cleaners® unique service is 'mobile', so you will never be without your furniture

Our specialised understanding of your upholstery ensures your purchase will look and feel great for many years

Most leather furniture pieces are 'finished' with a lacquer to protect the pigmented colour, andallow spills to be easily wiped away. However, with time this lacquer wears in the high use areas of the sofa, followed by the pigmented colour, allowing the exposed leather to quickly soil and wear. These areas can be prepared, re pigmented and conditioned to restore the look and improve your furniture’s longevity.

Sofa Cleaners® specialists have years of experience with furniture upholstery restoration, with unrivalled solutions to the many problems that can afflict leather furniture over time.

Your home will smell fresher and look cleaner!

What is leather, exactly?

The British Standards Institute, which seem trustworthy enough for our description define leather as follows: "Hide or skin with its original fibrous structure more or less intact and tanned. The hair or wool may, or may not, have been removed. Leather is also made from a hide or skin that has been split into layers or segmented either before or after tanning."

The amount of surface coating applied to the leather influences whether the item can be described as 'genuine' leather. "If the leather has a surface coating, the mean thickness of this surface layer, however applied, has to be 0.15mm or less."

In a nutshell, there are three basic types of genuine leather:
  • Full Grain: The full hide of the animal has been used with minimal interference. It's the most durable kind of leather but also the rarest and usually the most expensive.
  • Top Grain: Top grain leather is the uppermost layer of the animal hide which has been buffed and polished.
  • Split: Split leather is taken from the bottom of the hide; it's fragile but it is the cheapest type of leather available.

Corrected-grain is another common description, referring to any of the above leather that has had an artificial grain applied to its surface. Any imperfections are corrected or sanded off, and an artificial grain embossed into the surface and dressed with stain or dyes.

Not quite leather?

While shopping for a leather couch, you will likely see the words 'cow hide leather', 'genuine leather', '100% leather' or made-up names like 'Lucia leather' or even 'bonded leather' instead.

None of these names really give any indication of what kind of leather has been used or if indeed it's leather at all. Bonded leather (despite the name) has more in common with synthetics and is technically not considered leather at all.

Other pieces of 'leather' furniture may have the 'contact areas' (such as the seats, arm rests, vertical seat backs and rolls) upholstered in leather, but the 'non-contact areas' (such as the outside arms and back) upholstered in a leather-like synthetic material.

Leather Furniture Maintenance

Leather is one of the most durable and adhering upholstery materials, and when maintained correctly and consistently requires a minimal amount of professional maintenance in order to last you decades.

Monthly cleaning will help ensure your leather furniture stays looking new. You should never use furniture polish, window cleaner, rough cloth, paper towels or any other material that may scratch the surface of the leather or clog the pores with lint. Always allow the leather to naturally air dry completely.

before and after sofa Conditioning

Immediately blot liquid spills with a dry cloth then wipe the leather furniture with a lightly dampened cloth to remove any residue of the spill. Blot away the excess water with a dry cloth and allow the leather to finish drying naturally. The exception to this method is, of course, a water spill. In this case, simply blot away the water with a soft, dry cloth and allow to air dry as you normally would.

For food spills, especially oily foods, be sure to remove all food debris then wash the leather furniture with a dampened cotton cloth and a small amount of mild facial or dish soap. Wipe away excess soap with a dampened cloth and allow to air dry.

LEATHER CARE Do’s
  • Nourish and Condition Leather Furniture
  • Dust and Vacuum Leather Furniture
  • Blot up spills ASAP without excessive rubbing
  • Always treat with dedicated leather care products from day 1
  • Always clean high wear areas little and often
  • Always use water-based products – these will correct the moisture level of the leather and help avoid staining. They will also keep your leather in the best condition
  • Have your leather professionally cleaned at regular intervals. (annually is recommended)
  • Keep your leather covered when not in use
Leather CARE Don'ts
  • Do not forget to spot test any potential maintenance product
  • Do not let stains set
  • Do not use solvents or abrasives to try and remove stubborn stains or ink
  • Do not feed, nourish or condition your leather with oils or waxes
  • Do not allow dirt or soiling to build up. This is what often causes damage
  • Do not use general household cleaners
  • Do not allow staining or fading to become serious before considering professional restoration
  • Do not use baby wipes or magic erasers to clean your leather

What to ask before you buy a leather couch

  • "What type of leather is this couch?" Go for full grain or top grain leather, depending on your lifestyle and budget. Be wary of anything else, including split leather, bonded leather, pleather, faux leather, bi-cast, and synthetic leather.
  • "Is this leather used all over the couch?" A couch might have real leather on the seats and the tops of the arm rests, but not on the back or the sides. These will deteriorate faster than the leather parts.
  • "How long is the warranty?" And "what parts of the lounge are covered?"

Your home will smell fresher and look cleaner!
